Nu-Perspective Black History Month: Day 28- BANDIT!

We made it!!! Our Black History Month celebration is at an end. This was fun for me and a great way to re-introduce you to the Nu-Perspective column. I hope you enjoyed the work so far, cause we got even more hotness coming your way.
That's right, we celebrate Nubian pride all year round over here. And we will be back to dropping Nu-Perspective entries bi-weekly. In the meantime, we're ending off Black History Month with a brand new entry. Enter BANDIT!!

This character was suggested to me by an instagram follower, and I was glad cause I had completely forgot about this guy. So keep those ideas coming, you never know who you'll see.
.

And don't forget to stay behind for some thoughts on how and why Fabian (co-writer) and I went about doing what we did (go to the bottom to read). Enjoy our little take.

Real Name: Donyell Taylor

Current Alias: Bandit

Identity: Secret

Occupation: Former CEO of Taylor Foundation, Vigilante

Place of Birth: New Orleans

Base of Operations: Chicago

Affiliations: New Warriors (formerly), Unified Guild (debunked)

First Appearance: Night Thrasher #3 (1993)

Original Creators: Fabian Nicieza, Ken Lashley & Fred Haynes

Story: The illegitimate son of Daryl Taylor, and the older half-brother of Dwayne Taylor (Night Thrasher), Donyell grew up alienated from the life he thought he was meant to have. While Dwayne grew up with the fortune and prestige of his family name, Donyell Taylor had to struggle in the shadows. This did not bode well for young Donyell’s psychological development, and he became obsessively jealous with his more successful brother. Reaching adulthood, and realizing Dwayne was the vigilante Night Thrasher, Donyell adopted the vigilante persona of “Bandit” and started challenging his brother’s foes to prove he was better than him. He fought Night Thrasher a few times, “stole” his brother’s ex-lover Silhouette and even leading a version of his brother’s street-level vigilante team the “New Warriors”.

Donyell and Dwayne eventually reconciled their differences, and when his brother was thought dead, Donyell even adopted his brother’s identity as the new “Night Thrasher”. He formed a new New Warriors team, and proceeded to take over his father’s philanthropic organization the Taylor Foundation, putting all his resources into "saving" Night Thrasher.

His main focus was to attempt to use a temporal device to go back in time and save his brother, to which his New Warrior teammates were just a means to that end.  Things went very wrong however, and Donyell ended up killing his brother of an alternate universe where Dwayne had become a Draconian Iron Man (and Tony Stark was the universe’s Night Thrasher). That horrific event only fueled the Donyell’s mental instability and pain, and he subsequently disbanded the New Warriors and went into hiding, becoming a fugitive under Norman Osborn’s “Dark Avengers” campaign years ago.

He only came out of hiding upon hearing rumors that Dwayne Taylor was alive, and was reforming the New Warriors. Once again adopting the “Bandit” identity Donyell sought out his resurrected brother, and the reconciliation did a lot to heal his pain and guilt. With Night Thrasher's blessing Bandit started his own “New Warriors” team called the "Dark Warriors", comprised of overlooked rejects with great potential. The family rivalry is there, but much healthier, tempered with respect.

Powers/Abilities: Bandit has the mutant ability of bio-electricity, allowing him to generate a bio-aura that could shock persons like a tazer or electrocute them upon physical contact. It is not strong enough to discharge bolts or streams of electricity like other eletro-kinetic mutants and can only extend a few inches from his skin. He augments that with the special dart tipped wires he shoots from his gauntlets. His power was lost during the M-Day event, but he has miraculously gained them back; most likely due to the help of Silhouette’s brother Midnight’s Fire. Bandit is also on par with his brother Night Thrasher in terms of physical fitness, speed, strength, training and skills, even being able to best him in one-on-one combat on more than one occasion. He is also an accomplished thief and scientist.

Paraphernalia: Bandit’s armor is almost identical to Night Thrasher’s in composition and function, being of a military-grade light-weight bullet resistant and fire retardant material. It is also outfitted with a high-tech thermo-optic camouflage lining. The armor suit also comes with two multi-purpose wrist gauntlets that can, aside from shooting tazer cords, also launch a grapple line, a hacking interface, and has retractable blades. Twin conducting brass knuckles on his hands allow him to channel his bio-electricity through for deadly hand-to-hand blows. His jacket has hidden compartments for caltrops, smoke pellets, mini explosive and other devices and gadgets. Bandit is also skilled with twin Escrima sticks which can channel his bio-electricity or be charged with ion energy. He has also been known to carry an assortment of knives and throwing stars.

What IS Nu-Perspective you ask? Well, it's a bi-weekly column I started with my writing collaborator Fabian Wood with the purpose of revamping and updating different underdeveloped, underutilized and all-but-forgotten Nubian (black) comic book and pop culture characters.

Fine Print: Nu-Perspective is a column focused on revamps and updates of various underdeveloped, underutilized and all-but-forgotten Nubian (black) characters specifically. We aim to showcase these chosen characters in fresh, contemporary and exciting ways both visually and story-wise to show just how awesome they can truly be. All characters are copyrights and trademarks of the respective publishers and creators. This column is used solely for artistic enjoyment.

Nu-Perspective Black History Month: Day 25- CREED

Wow, the final days of our Black History Month celebration. So if you've been paying attention you would know that each day of February I re-released a Nu-Perspective revamped comic book/pop culture character. But so far these characters have all been from North America. Well, time to switch it up. I want to highlight some characters and creators from my homeland of Barbados. Now, these ones are reposts, but they aren't revamps, just my style on some pretty sick characters. You will still get the complete bio and art, I just feel these characters deserve some love.

First up we have Joshua Creed- from the novel "The Soltreian Chronicles" created and written by Omar Kennedy. See more at: Fb: The Soltreian Chronicles

Creed (no, I didn't draw him incorrectly, those are his proportions, he's short and stocky)

Identity: Publicly known
Place of Birth: Bridgetown, Barbados
Group Affiliations: The Members Immortalis
Base of Operations: Soltreus

History: Killed along with seven and a half billion people in the apocalypse known as The Fall, the man who would become Joshua Creed awoke in a post-apocalyptic landscape by the enigmatic Lord Armant Zhol. Now immortal, Creed realizes that the apocalypse that the world suffered was a man-made event and now races against time to prevent the Calamity – the true apocalypse which is destined to doom every living thing that has or will ever exist.

He can recover in hours from injuries that would mortally wound regular men. His willpower and ingenuity are unmatched. There are few who can truly best him.

The sword, like the gun, are nigh indestructible and can cut through almost any known substance. Neither weapon can be removed.

Nu-Perspective Black History Month: Day 24- CHAPEL!

What's up peeps. We're celebrating Black History Month by re-releasing all of last year's Nu-Perspective revamped characters each day.
With these reposts you get the same full bio, art and our storyline concept, but also some behind the scenes thoughts on how and why Fabian (co-writer) and I went about doing what we did (go to the bottom).

As we wind down to the end of February we're dropping a classic character in the indy game- CHAPEL!

Chapel is from the comic Youngblood, created by Image co-founder Rob Liefield and produced under his Extreme imprint label. Check out our update and let us know what you think.

Real Name: Bruce Stinson
Current Alias: Chapel
Identity: Secret
Occupation: Supernatural Mercenary
Place of Birth: Joliet, Illinois
Base of Operations: Mobile
Affiliations: Bloodstrike (formerly), Youngblood (formerly), Hell (formerly)
First Appearance: Youngblood #1 (1992)
Original Creators: Rob Liefeld

Story: Chapel was born in a prison in Joliet, Illinois, and was seen as the perfect soldier due to his willingness for extreme violence. Driven by an insatiable bloodlust, Chapel’s thirst for violence made it impossible to work with others, as he even turned against his own Youngblood teammates. The man who killed Albert “Al” Simmons out of professional jealousy, Chapel was directly responsible for turning his brother-in-arms into a Hellspawn. His rivalrous vendetta with Simmons drove him further insane, as he killed himself in order to be reborn as a powerful Hellspawn. Instead, Bruce was brought back as “Lord Chapel”, a Horseman of the Apocalypse. When he was separated from this creature, Chapel was resurrected under mysterious circumstances and returned as a woman named Gazer, only to be turned back to a man again and left feeling empty. He then teamed-up with Spawn to face his other half, Lord Chapel. Now a virtually unequaled supernatural bounty hunter and mercenary with no allegiance, Chapel’s goal is to rid the world of all angels, demons, men and gods who were formerly under Lord Chapel’s command and his own heel when he was Lord Chapel.

Powers/Abilities: Formerly granted enhanced physical attributes by chemical injections, Chapel is now an enigma. He is seemingly a type of undead via the same demonic sorcery, alchemy and resurrection used to create Hellspawn, but with a few tweaks. Unlike other Hellspawns who are fused with a sentient neural parasite made of necroplasm, Chapel appears to be the reverse, a “stillborn” necroplasm parasite given physical form and limitations and with the tattered soul of Bruce. Although not immortal, this reincarnation has rendered Chapel extremely hard to kill with only decapitation or divine weaponry able to finish him. He not only has supernatural levels of strength, speed, senses and durability, but also an unparalleled healing factor, with the caveat of painful regeneration. He can now also render himself intangible to mortal and supernatural attacks, and he can phase through solid matter. Chapel has also exhibited a small degree of telekinesis and telepathy to psychologically torture his targets. Chapel can now literally feed on violence and rage, even what he creates for himself to amplify his powers. As such, he is most vulnerable where there is little or no violent psychic energy. Chapel’s most prominent power is the ability to summon a myriad of bladed weapons and firearms of his own imagination from his being at will. The bladed weapons can slice through any Earthly metal and are durable enough to withstand strikes from divine and demonic counterparts. The guns fire necromantic energy, which is exhaustible after prolonged use, and would need to be rejuvenated over time. Due to his many years of military and guerilla training, Chapel is an exceptional marksman, strategist, tactician and combatant in both hand-to-hand and firearms.

Paraphernalia: Although Chapel’s body is a one-stop-shop for virtually any weapon he desires, he still fancies keeping (and using) a cache of military-grade weapons on Earth (and elsewhere) in safe houses.

Extra: Chapel seems to not be as bloodthirsty as before when it comes to harming humans but has no such limitations when it comes to his supernatural enemies.
