NuPerspective Black History Month: Day8- HOTWING

For Black History Month I've decided to re-release the characters posted from last year's Nu-Perspective column as a "character-a-day". What IS Nu-Perspective you ask? Well, it's a bi-weekly column I started with my writing collaborator Fabian Wood with the purpose of revamping and updating different underdeveloped, underutilized and all-but-forgotten Nubian (black) comic book and pop culture characters.
With this repost, you get the same full bio, art and our storyline concept, but also some behind the scenes thoughts on how and why Fabian and I went about doing what we did.

For last May’s Nu-Perspective, it was all about the memories of early Saturday morning cartoon as a
kid. We celebrated and mourned that perfect combo of sugar fueled cereal and action packed
animated days of yore we bringing you HOTWING, from the 80’s hit The SilverHawks!!!

Real Name: Unknown
Current Alias: Hotwing
Identity: Public
Occupation: Law Enforcement Officer
Place of Birth: Unknown
Base of Operations: Hawk Haven; Limbo Galaxy
Affiliations: SilverHawks
First Appearance: Silver Hawks episode 21-“Hotwing Hits Limbo” (June 10, 1986)
Voiced by: Adolph Caesar and later Doug Preis

Story: Hotwing is a SilverHawk, a law enforcement officer that has undergone a cyborg
makeover in order to withstand the effects of hyper space travel. He is a Squadron Leader in
Rank.  Not much is known about Hotwing's history, but he is an invaluable asset to the
SilverHawks. He is a magician and showman, both in terms of personality and ability. It has
been seven cycles since the evil tyrant Mon*Star destroyed Hawk Haven and crippled the
SilverHawks. Now, the Limbo galaxy has been dominated by the unopposed criminal empire of
Mon*Star’s minions and henchmen. Returning from an extended mission in deep space, the
golden-plated Hotwing finds his system wallowing in crime and corruption as never before,
where hope and justice for the innocent and oppressed has become a foreign concept. Pledging to
bring order and justice back to his system, Hotwing knows all too well he cannot do this alone.
Enlisting help from comrades long thought dead and new allies, Hotwing now commands a
covert guerilla law-enforcement unit of new SilverHawks to wage war against Mon*Star’s
regime, with the hopes of liberating the Limbo galaxy from his iron grip.

Powers: As a SilverHawk, Hotwing is a highly sophisticated biotic (half-man/half-machine)
with enhanced strength, speed and durability. He is also outfitted with standard laser embedded
in his shoulders and forearms. His specially designed wings and mask allow for both terrestrial
and interplanetary flight, protecting him from the rigors of space and most uninhabitable
atmospheric conditions. He however still needs to eat, sleep and breathe oxygen. Due to his half-
Mime DNA, Hotwing has pointed elven ears. Hotwing was blessed by a mysterious magical
source to be a crusader for justice in times of great peril. This source imbues Hotwing with the
power of illusions that appear so authentic, they can even fool machines. This has made him a
master of stealth, infiltration and disguise. This power must be replenished ever 14 years or he
will die. If replenished however, i is believed that this enables Hotwing to have an extended
lifespan, even more than other extraterrestrials, and some may surmise it has effectively rendered
him immortal. He also possesses telekinetic abilities, the limits of which have not been stated.

Paraphernalia/Weapons: “Power crystal” in his forehead. Hotwing is often accompanied by his
biotic “weapon-bird” companion, Gyro.

Q&A with Shawn

What do you like most about the character?- Shawn: This is a tough one to answer. I didn't know too much about the character. If I had to pick one thing I would say I like the "magic" aspect of him. Something different added to this world of technology and sci-fi.

What made you choose this character?- S: His name alone warranted a revamp. lol

Did the character pose a challenge to update and if so what was the hardest part of the redesign?- S: The hard part for me was drawing robotic elements. And making it looking mechanical but biological at the same time.

In regards to the story aspect of the update, what was your main inspiration for the direction?- S: The main goal was to clarify some of the ambiguity of his story.

In hindsight is there anything you would do differently now?- S: Maybe make him more bionic.
